What are Micheladas, and Why are They so Popular?

A wise man once asked, “what’s the best thing for a hangover?” The answer is simple; “drinking heavily the night before.” In all seriousness, many people look to a Sunday brunch to alleviate the after-effects of a decadent evening. While bloody marys and mimosas are the go-to options for many, the Michelada may very well become your new favorite brunch staple and hangover remedy.

What is a Michelada?

The michelada is a cocktail by way of Mexico. Like the bloody mary, it’s a concoction referred to as “the hair of the dog.” And what’s even better is that they can be made in the comfort of your home, just in case you don’t feel like dragging yourself to the brunch table.

Ingredients

1 oz Hot Sauce (we recommend top shelf, but the average quality is acceptable)

1 oz Lime Juice

1/2 oz Orange Juice

2 Spoonfuls of Sea Salt

One Bottle of Beer (Tecate or Corona is recommended.

Preparation

Rim the edge of a glass with Tajin if desired

Add hot sauce, lime, salt, and orange juice into the glass and stir until all the ingredients come together.

Add ice, top with beer, and mix.

Drink it and enjoy yourself.

A Brief History of the Michelada

The michelada is very popular in Mexico City. Many restaurants frequented by tourists serve them up, and even street vendors sell them. Depending on your location, many varieties of the drink can be found all over Mexico. Some contain shrimp, bacon, and other vegetables. Like so many other customs tourists enjoy, the michelada has made its way to the United States. Because of the commercialization of alcohol, many can be found previously made in cans ready for consumption. However, we recommend having one made for you by the expert care of a professional or at home. After all, canned beers are nice to have from time to time, but canned cocktails can never replicate the experience of one that’s freshly made right in front of you.
